Unfortunately the wintry elements (a major blizzard had occurred the previous night in the West Country) prevented the Organisers from taking a Deltic to Devon on this day and the tour returned as outward to Paddington. A rerun was however soon arranged for 5 March.. Copyright Colin J. Marsden 55018 waits in the snow on the Down Main at Lawrence Hill. With the line south of Bristol blocked by snow the tour was held here for several minutes whilst a decision was made as regarding what to do with it. It eventually continued the short distance on to Bristol Temple Meads. This shot was obtained using a Brownie 127 & 1/30 shutter with no adjustment capability. Following cosmetic restoration it was delivered to the Science Museum, South Kensington on 28 April 1963. From left to right are 55010 (ex 1E43), 55013 (ex 1A45 - on which the photographer had travelled up behind from Doncaster), 55008 (ex 1E39) and 55007 (ex 1E40). This may have been one of the final occasions that such a scene occurred at Kings Cross. A fifth loco 55016 had arrived earlier with 1E35 and being the first to arrive was used on the 'Devonian' replacing 55002 which had become a failure at Finsbury Park Depot.
